The Community Center of Maboim

Merhavim (1996)

The community center of Maboim was planned to be built in the Merhavim Regional Municipality in the Negev for a population of 7,000 inhabitants from the surrounding area and serve its wide variety of cultural activities.

The proposed community center was planned to serve a wide range of age groups and people: a day-care center for infants and a full range of activities for local youth and adults in arts & crafts, music and sports.

At the heart of the building is a multi-purpose hall - a place for communal gatherings, festivities and performances.

The building is located far from the highway and thus is visible and impressive from a distance. The visitor ascends to the building moderately, through a ramp and stairs.  The design language creates contrasts between translucent elements and monolithic ones; the built masses are contrasted by the lacelike or translucent elements of the several versions of colonnades: round, straight, tall and short.

The landscape development responds to the basic geometrical forms by terraces echoing the rounded and orthogonal shapes of the building.
