The Eial Shimoni Sports Center, Kibbutz Ashdot Yaacov (2001)

This project of the Eial Shimoni Sports Center combines a sports hall with swimming pools and a memorial hall, or 'a place of remembrance'. We looked for a metaphoric interpretation for these concepts in architecture. Therefore we related to swimming as a 'horizontal movement' in contrast with remembrance as a 'vertical movement' pointing towards the heaven or sky.

The cone shaped entrance is the memorial hall pointing upwards, defining verticality. The roofs covering the swimming pools are metallic waves strengthening the horizontality of the movement of swimming, or of the movement of waves in the sea. There is vast usage of light, metallic and translucent materials: metal roofs, planes of glass and bare aluminum bars crossing over the openings.
